Ancient Knowledge, Modern Reflections

June 27, 2024

Ancient Knowledge, Modern Reflections is a special exhibition at St Andrew’s Hospital of 12 artworks on loan from the Glenelg Art Gallery.

Curated by gallery director Rowena Brown, the works by seven female Aboriginal artists feature stories of art, care, and country.

The artists featured are: Audrey Brumby, Roxanne Napaljarri Collins, Justinna Napaljarri Sims, Rhubee Neale, Karen Bird Ngale, Jeannie Petyarre and Jeannie Mills Pwerle.

St Andrew’s Hospital is grateful to Kaurna Elder Uncle Tamaru for his introduction to the Glenelg Art Gallery, and for his support and friendship in the development of the hospital’s first Reconciliation Action Plan to be launched later this year.

Hospital CEO Stephen Walker says ”this exhibition is a wonderful celebration of Aboriginal art and I am really very proud to share these works with our patients, visitors and staff.”

Gallery Director Rowena Brown says "It is humbling and enriching to work with these beautiful women, their families and others in the Communities over the last 25 years. There is so much Culture and history of teaching in these paintings. Before colonisation, images were drawn in the sand to teach how to find ones way around Country, how to navigate by the stars, where to find seasonal food and water, family history, Lore, and sacred grounds. It is a privilege to share these works with you.”

Over 40,000 patients attend St Andrew’s Hospital annually, and the hope is that this exhibition inspires and delights our hospital community.

Artwork prices are listed on this flyer. For all enquiries and to purchase the artwork please contact the St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation.

St Andrew’s Hospital acknowledge the Kaurna People of the Adelaide Plains on which land the Hospital resides. We respect their Native Title Right to Country. We recognize their strength and resilience and pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging.

Special thanks to our RAP Working Group staff members for working with the Glenelg Art Gallery to create this project.
